Trade credentials: a $6Tn low-hanging fruit

Global trade is worth upwards of US$25 trillion annually. Yet there may still be at least US$6 trillion in trapped and potential value waiting to be unlocked.

Why have decades of digitisation left so much value in the system? What could portable, verifiable trade credentials change? And where are the commercial opportunities for people capable of putting them to work?

Borrowing the title of a session at the recent Global Digital Collaboration Conference in Geneva, we are running a series on LinkedIn exploring those questions.

Here are the posts so far:

  1. Why has digitisation left so much value trapped?

  2. The scale and complexity of modern trade

  3. What passports teach us about trusted digital trade

There’s also an associated post on the Pyx Pulse blog: Success story: The passport

  1. Who will unlock the commercial value?

What comes next?

The next instalment will examine the signals that can reveal where repeated friction, trapped value, regulatory pressure and readiness are converging around an opportunity worth pursuing.

As the series develops, we would like to hear what it brings up for you.

Do you see an industry, supply chain or community where trade credentials could unlock value? What questions do you have about the opportunity or how it could be pursued? Perhaps you can also see a role for yourself or your organisation in identifying use cases, convening participants, directing funding, designing solutions or taking implementations to scale.
